Dear Brethren,

MEDITATION

17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Colossians 1:17-18

 

OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION

1. And He (Jesus Christ) is before all things…

a. The Lord Jesus is before all things

i. It speaks of the pre-existence of Christ in eternity

ii. It underscores the primacy of the Lord Jesus over all things

b. In Him all things consist

i. In Christ all things must find the full meaning of their existence

ii. This is God’s gigantic design for all things

2. And He is the head of the body, the church…

a. The Lord Jesus is the Head of the Body – the Church

i.He leads the Church

ii. He rules over the Church

b. The Lord Jesus is the beginning

i.He is the beginning of the Church

ii. He is the beginning of our life and faith

c. The Lord Jesus is the firstborn from the dead

i.The Lord Jesus is the first risen One from the dead

ii. We who believe in Him will be risen from the dead too (John 11:25-26)

 

3. That in all things He may have the preeminence

a. All that Jesus is has this purpose

i. That He may have the preeminence

ii. That He may have the superiority

b. This is the purpose behind all of who the Lord Jesus is

 

APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY

1. Let us acknowledge the Lord Jesus for who He really is
2. Let us not lose sight of the preeminence of the Lord Jesus in all things
